INTRODUCTION:
The founder of Osogbo: Owa Larooye and Oguntimehin (Timehin) came from Ipole, the original homestead of the earliest settlers, around 1650 and 1700. timehin who was a great hunter had made several expeditions to the Osun forest during which he discovered Osun River whose water never dried throughout the year. Timehin who was impressed by what he who was impressed by what he saw went back to Ipole and told his people who had been experiencing acute water shortage to relocate to the area where shortage. After due consultion, Laro Timehin and their people left Ipole to settle along Osun river,
Legend has it that when a tree fell into the historic river a voice from within the river complained and pleaded saying:”Oso Igboo, gbogbo ikoko aro mi ni et fo tan, esun is ok eke ele le maa gberu si” meaning spirit of forest, you have broken all my dyeing pots, move upwards from here so that you can propsper. Laor and Timehin were said to have replied in fear saying, Osogbo pelo which translates into “the spirit of the forest, sorry”. The two men believed the voice to be the of the Osun goddess
From that day the settlers called their abode, Osoigbo, which was later perfected to Osogbo. The spot where the Osun River is worshipped today was the spot where Oosgbo people first settled. The settkers had also moved upwards following the complaint of the goddess.
But the present Osogbo Local Government was created on May 19th, 1989. It was created out of the old local government which consisted of the present Oosgbo and Olrunda Local Government. The headquarters is at Oke- Baale area along Ibokun Road. |
